March 27, 2006 - The early asking price for naming rights to the proposed stadium for both the New York Giants and Jets is $20 million a year, according to several sources with knowledge of the situation.
While it is very early in the selling process for a building in New Jersey that is still in the conceptual stages, $20 million is the figure that has been told to sales agencies bidding on the business and some early inquirers.
The biggest naming-rights deal in the United States is Reliant Energy's 30-year, $300 million deal for the home to the Houston Texans and the Astrodome complex. But this new building in the country's biggest market will be the only stadium to house two NFL franchises. The projected 81,000-seat stadium isn't scheduled to open until 2010 at the earliest.
"The pool of international companies probably doubles the number of likely candidates and increases the price as much as 20 percent," said Harlan Stone, a principal at Velocity Sports & Entertainment, which brokered Citizen Bank's naming-rights deal at the Philadelphia Phillies' park. "So that number is not as crazy as it sounds."
Three agencies are vying for the opportunity to sell the naming rights: IMG, 16W Marketing, which is enlisting the aid of EJ Narcise's Team Services unit, and Wasserman Media Group.
