April 24, 2003- ING is in talks with the
New York Road Runners Club, the race organizer, to become
title sponsor of the New York City Marathon, according
to the Sports Business Journal. Mike Reisman of Velocity
Sports & Entertainment, a sports marketing and consulting
agency, said the sponsors of the New York City Marathon
might have reached a moment of truth: what to do when
revenue expectations do not mesh with tradition. "In
the case of the marathon, the operational cost of insurance
has probably increased tenfold in the last few years,"
Reisman said. "Add in 9/11 and those costs in combination
with a media-rights market that is deflating."
