The New York Times: Media Group Sales Meeting 2008

Situation   The Senior Vice President and Chief Advertising Officer of The New York Times wanted to motivate the 325 sales people to innovate and drive greater revenue across newspaper and digital assets, through the platform of a sales conference. Velocity is The New York Times’ go-to resource for meeting planning.

A two-day conference was scheduled in the first quarter of 2008, and was the first of its size held in the new NYT building in New York City, at The TimesCenter. The group size was very close to the capacity of the TimesCenter. The conference takes place every other year so it must be impactful.
Solution   With The New York Times, Velocity designed an engaging and compelling agenda that featured:

- CEO’s and external guest speakers that spoke to transformation
- Senior NYT Company executives who communicated the company’s plans for the future
- Leadership Moments that shared successful advertising programs with significant results
- A teambuilding exercise with Legos that encouraged creativity, innovation and interaction
- An evening function at the recently renovated Jeremiah Essex House that facilitated networking and open dialogue

In its role, Velocity managed the logistical planning and interfaced with all attendees, executives and speakers, suppliers and venue personnel. Expectations were established upfront, and facilitated throughout (in advance and at the conference). Not until the budget was reconciled, surveys compiled and recommendations for future sales conferences shared was Velocity’s role complete.

Results   Exceptionally positive feedback from the SVP & Chief Advertising Officer as well as many of the participating sales people, who were better prepared to speak with their advertisers and potential new advertisers. Attendees departed reinvigorated.
